HomePemba Island Tours

Enjoy the beautiful Islands of Zanzibar

If you want a paradise island, you should find Pemba on your map. Lush hills, green plantations and forest everywhere, amazing snow-like white sand beaches and serene small towns. This is Pemba, the green paradise of Zanzibar.

Pemba has three major towns: Chake Chake (where the airport is), Mkoani (where the ferry port is) and Wete, which is near to Ngezi Forest and the amazing beaches of the northern tip of the island.

Pemba is still widely untouched by tourism. There are some hotels in Pemba island, some of them listed below- There are high end hotels with excellent service and several town places with very affordable prices.

To walk around towns like Wete is a pleasure, especially after moving around in the crowded Zanzibar beaches and towns. Tourism is not a major source of income yet, so walking around is peaceful and shopping is easy, with less bargaining left to do. But note that town shops close early, and the late afternoon is already family time in local homes.

Main income for Pemba is the cultivation of cloves, which you can sometimes even sense in the air.

BULL FIGHTING GAME

OVERVIEW

The island of Pemba is famed for its traditional sport of bull fighting. Unlike its Spanish counterpart, this sport does not involve killing the bulls, but is a hangover from the days of Portuguese rule in the 16th and 17th centuries. The tradition, as it is practiced today, involves professional toreros (also called toreadors) who execute various formal moves which can be interpreted and innovated according to the bullfighter's style or school.

There is no particular time for bull fighting, although the hottest time of the year between July and February appears to be the favored season. The most common bull fighting points on the island of Pemba are Kojani Island, Kangagani, and Chuale villages. The villages are among the places where Portuguese left their living evidence in the late 16th and the beginning of 17th Centuries before the coming of the Arab rulers from Oman.

They have a wingspan of 1.6 meters; It is a large fruit bat with chestnut-red fur, orange underpants, and a black face and wings. The ears are short and pointed. Gathering in mixed-sex groups of up to 850 individuals to roost, the Pemba flying fox creates quite a spectacle. The mating time is between January and April, births occurring between June and August.

The Pemba flying fox feeds on mangos, breadfruit, figs, flowers and leaves, and may be the only species on the island that disperses larger seeds, thereby proving essential to the survival of the plants that produce them.
